Did you know that there is a $3.1 billion deficit in the state budget? Buncombe County Schools is anticipating a loss of $27 million for the 2010-2011 school year. This is in addition to cuts over the last couple of years that resulted in 136 lay offs, which included 47 teachers. The $27 million loss could mean the additional loss of 450 staff positions across the county, 90 of which could be classroom teachers, and many others of which could be classroom assistants.
